There is a moment, about six hours into Driftbound, where the map stops being a checklist and starts being a place. The waypoints fall away. You crest a ridge not because a marker told you to, but because you wanted to see what was on the other side. That shift — from obligation to curiosity — is the whole game in miniature, and it is rarer than it should be.
Most experiences are afraid of your attention. They fill every gap with an icon, terrified you might get bored for thirty seconds. Driftbound makes the opposite bet. It hands you a horizon and trusts you to find your own reason to walk toward it. For long stretches, nothing “happens,” and yet I was never bored.
It is the rare game confident enough to let you be alone with your thoughts.
